Our volunteers are special to us, giving their time and their hearts to help LIA help the poor.

To be a volunteer in Africa is not for the faint hearted, it is for people who are willing to give 100% and more. You will witness many things that you would never have imagined, but it is guaranteed that your heart will be touched and you will leave with many memories of individual children and the many different characters that you will meet.

The story A Volunteer Perspective is a great way to start your orientation.
Also, Luzia and Nienke have been volunteers at our centre and would like to share with you about their time spent with us.

We would ask you to raise sufficient funds (we recommend you raise a minimum equivalent of 1,000 US Dollars) for Light in Africa volunteering projects, which will all be used to directly help the local people. The uniqueness of Light in Africa's volunteering program is that the volunteer is and remains fully in control of how the project money is spent. There are many ways in which the money can be spent such as the purchase of medicine for the outreach program or on home repairs for a poor family or on construction materials for a new home or the Tudor Village, for an emergency medical treatment or ..., or ..., or ...  and this will be decided by you, the volunteer upon arrival to LIA.

A group of American students in the summer of 2001 raised funds to provide the metal sheeting for two old ladies houses in the nearby village of Mbwerra. The students purchased the sheeting and tools needed and then they themselves renewed the roofs. This was wonderful, and it means that the old Bebe's do not get wet in the rainy seasons, as they used to with just a roof of insect infected banana leaves. What an achievement! It was enough just to watch the faces on these Bebe's. Thank you students.
